Website handover
A website handover is the point where a finished site passes to the client, with the logins, accounts and notes they need to run it without you.
What it means
Launch day is when the site goes live. Handover is when the client can run it: they can log in to everything that is theirs, they know what renews and when, and they know what your ongoing work covers and what it doesn't.
The accounts that matter most are the ones the business can't run without: the domain name, the hosting, the business email and the Google Business Profile. Each should be in the client's name, with the client able to log in, and you added as a user where you still need access.
An example
A physio clinic's site goes live. At handover you send one page: the domain and when it renews, the hosting account and who pays it, how to log in to edit the opening hours, and what the care plan includes. Eight months later, when the domain renewal email arrives, it goes to the clinic's own address, and they know what to do with it.
Why it matters
A poor handover looks fine on launch day and turns into a problem months later, when a renewal notice goes to an old email address or the client wants to change hosting and can't log in.
